The Perfect 7-Day South Dakota Road Trip

7-Day South Dakota Road Trip Itinerary

Day 1 – Mount Rushmore + Iron Mountain Road

Start your trip at Mount Rushmore National Memorial. Visiting early in the morning or near sunset usually means fewer crowds and better light.

Afterward drive Iron Mountain Road, one of the most scenic drives in the Black Hills. Several tunnels perfectly frame Mount Rushmore as you approach.

Stop at Sylvan Lake if you have time. It’s one of the most beautiful lakes in the Black Hills and great for a short walk.

Day 2 – Custer State Park

Spend the day exploring Custer State Park.

Drive the Wildlife Loop Road, where you’ll often see bison, pronghorn, and sometimes wild burros.

Other great stops in the park include:

Sylvan Lake

Needles Highway (famous for its narrow tunnels and granite spires)

Cathedral Spires viewpoints

This is one of the best places in the U.S. to see wild bison roaming freely.

Day 3 – Crazy Horse Memorial

Visit Crazy Horse Memorial, the largest mountain carving in the world that is still being built.

You can explore the museum and cultural center and view the monument from the main viewing area.

Plan about 1–2 hours here.

Day 4 – Wind Cave National Park

Take a guided tour of Wind Cave National Park.

Wind Cave is one of the longest caves in the world and is famous for its rare boxwork formations, which are found in very few caves on Earth.

Important:

Reservations are recommended and can sell out in advance.

If you don’t have reservations, arrive early when the visitor center opens. They often release same-day tickets for remaining spots.

After your cave tour, spend some time driving through the park — bison and prairie dogs are commonly seen above ground.

Day 5 – Jewel Cave National Monument

Visit Jewel Cave, the third-longest cave system in the world.

Guided tours take you deep underground through massive rooms filled with crystal formations.

Important:

Reservations are strongly recommended.

If tours are sold out online, arrive when the visitor center opens in the morning to try to get same-day tickets.

Day 6 – Spearfish Canyon + Deadwood

Drive the beautiful Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway.

Stop at:

  • Bridal Veil Falls

  • Spearfish Falls

  • Roughlock Falls

All waterfalls are right off the road and easy to visit.

Afterward head to Deadwood, a historic Wild West town.

Deadwood is known for its gold rush history and daily street shootout reenactments, which make it a fun stop for families.

Day 7 – Badlands National Park

Finish your trip at Badlands National Park.

Drive the Badlands Loop Road, stopping at scenic overlooks along the way.

Great short hikes include:

Door Trail

Window Trail

Notch Trail

The Badlands are especially incredible at sunrise or sunset, when the rock formations glow with color.

Optional stop on the way out: Wall Drug Store.
